Diagnostics: 4 Things to Check First
Before taking the motoblock to a repair shop, run a quick self-diagnostic. Start with the simplest and fastest check. In about 20-30% of cases the cause is obvious and can be resolved in 10 seconds.

- Fuel level in the tank – make sure there is fuel and that there is enough of it.
- Fuel valve position – the valve must be fully open (it is often forgotten after transport or storage).
- Throttle lever and decompressor position – the throttle should be in the "start" or "open" position, and the decompressor (if fitted) must be set correctly.
- Check the battery power if your model uses an electric starter, and make sure there is a spark at the spark plugs.
If the engine starts after carrying out these steps, the problem is resolved. If not, proceed to a more thorough fault-finding process.
10 reasons why a motoblock won"t start – and how to fix each one
Sometimes a motoblock stops starting for no apparent reason. In some cases, the problem is immediately obvious. However, there are also instances where a visual inspection fails to reveal any damage. In such cases, it is worth checking for the most common faults that prevent the engine from starting.
Every problem has its own symptoms and causes. Below, we"ll look at the main faults and advise you on what to do in each specific case.
1. A problem with the fuel system (a blocked carburettor or filter)
Symptom: the engine won"t start or cuts out after 10-20 seconds.
Cause: dirt, water or old gasoline.
What to do: drain the petrol, remove the fuel filter and rinse it in clean petrol. Dismantle the carburettor, blow out the jets with compressed air (2-4 atm) or flush them with carburettor cleaner. Replace the filter if it has darkened or is not allowing fuel to pass through.
2. No spark (spark plug)
Symptom: the starter motor turns, but there are no sparks.
Cause: carbon build-up, incorrect gap, insulator breakdown.
What to do: remove the spark plug and check for a spark "to earth". The correct gap is 0.6-0.8 mm. Clean off carbon deposits with a wire brush; replace the spark plug if it is badly worn. ➡️ For 168F/170F – F6RTC/F7RTC spark plug, for 186F – F8RTC.
3. Problems with the ignition system (magneto or coil)
Symptom: there is no spark at all, even after fitting a new spark plug.
Cause: most often, the gap between the magneto and the flywheel is out of adjustment (it should be 0.2-0.35 mm).
What to do: remove the cover, check the gap with a feeler gauge and adjust it to the correct setting. If the magneto is severely worn or damaged, it will need to be replaced.
4. A dirty air filter
Symptom: the engine "stalls", emits black smoke and struggles to rev up.
Cause: this often occurs after winter storage and when operating in dusty areas.
What to do: remove the filter. Wash the foam filter in warm soapy water, wring it out thoroughly and leave it to dry. Replace the paper filter with a new one.
⚠️ Important! Never start the engine without a filter.
5. No or low oil level
Symptom: The engine will not start (many 168F/170F/186F models are fitted with an oil level sensor).
Cause: The dry-start protection has been triggered.
What to do: check the oil level with the dipstick. Top up with SAE 10W-40 or 15W-40 to the upper mark. After topping up, wait 5 minutes and try starting the engine again.
6. Faulty fuel tap or blocked fuel line
Symptom: gasoline is not reaching the carburettor.
Cause: if the motoblock is left standing with fuel in the tank for several months (especially in winter), the petrol oxidises, evaporates and leaves behind sticky resins, varnish and sediment. These clog the tap, the tube and the jets.
What to do: disconnect the hose from the carburettor, open the tap – a steady flow should come out. Blow through the tube and the tap. If they are blocked or cracked, replace them.
7. Problem with the decompressor (diesel)
Symptom: diesel engine is hard to turn over and won"t start.
Cause: dirt, dust, wear particles or carbon deposits often get into the decompressor.
What to do: before starting, be sure to press and hold the decompression lever until the engine starts. When cold: pump the lever 2-3 times, engage the decompression lever, turn the starter 5-7 times, then start the engine.
8. Air leakage through the carburettor gasket
Symptom: erratic revs, "sputtering", difficult to start when the engine is hot.
Cause: over time, the gasket becomes stiff, cracks, shrinks and loses its elasticity due to constant exposure to petrol, high temperatures and vibration.
What to do: apply soapy water or carb cleaner to the joints. Bubbles indicate a leak. Replace the gasket.
9. The battery is flat (for models with an electric starter)
Symptom: the starter motor turns slowly or clicks.
Cause: the battery terminals are corroded or loose.
What to do: charge the battery to 12.6 V. If necessary, jump-start the vehicle using a battery from another vehicle.
10. Wear and tear on the piston assembly or valves
Symptoms: good-quality gasoline, spark, compression below 6-8 atm (normal range 8-12 atm).
Causes: use of unsuitable oil, prolonged operation at maximum revs, infrequent servicing.
