Choosing wheels and tires for a moped: size, class, season

Choosing wheels and tires for a moped: size, class, season

The correct selection of motorcycle tires directly affects the handling of light two-wheeled vehicles, braking distances, and driver safety on the road. Many owners mistakenly consider buying tires a simple task, choosing the first tire with the appropriate diameter they see. For example, installing overly wide tires (4.60x18 instead of the standard 2.75-17) on popular mopeds like the Alpha or Delta often results in the tire rubbing against the rear swingarm, chain guard, or fender, increasing tire wear and the risk of tire seizure.

The modern market offers dozens of different models, and without basic knowledge, it's easy to buy the wrong set. ➡️ This article will help you understand the key parameters and accurately buy moped tires based on operating conditions. We'll look at the differences between classic sizes (2.25-17, 2.50-17, 2.75-17), tread patterns (urban, all-terrain, enduro/mud), and load index selection rules (e.g. 41P or 43P for riding with a passenger or cargo).

How to read moped tire markings

The markings on the tire sidewall contain basic information about its size and construction. Knowing how to decipher these markings will help you choose the right tire and avoid financial losses from ordering the wrong one. For small-capacity vehicles, two main size designation formats are most commonly used.

➡️ Format in inches

To determine the parameters of the inch format, it is worth paying attention to the following elements:

  1. The first digit (e.g., 2.50 or 3.00): the nominal section width of the tire in inches (2.50 inches ≈ 63.5 mm; 3.00 inches ≈ 76.2 mm).
  2. The second digit (e.g., 17 or 10): the exact rim diameter in inches (e.g., R17 is the most common size for Alpha, Delta, and Active mopeds).

These parameters help quickly find classic tires for traditional Chinese models. ✅ Often, in inch format, the profile height is considered equal to its width (100%), meaning a 2.75-17 tire has a sidewall height of approximately 70 mm.

➡️ Metric format

For more modern scooters and mopeds, the metric format is used, which includes the following indicators:

  1. The first number (90 or 100): the motorcycle tire width in millimeters.
  2. The second number (80 or 90): the aspect ratio, expressed as a percentage of the tire's width (e.g., for a 90/90-12 tire, the sidewall height is 90% of 90 mm = 81 mm).
  3. The third number (14 or 16): the rim diameter in inches.

This format allows you to more accurately select a tire for a specific wheel arch. Also pay attention to speed and load ratings, such as 41P (maximum load up to 145 kg per wheel, speed up to 150 km/h) or 43P (up to 155 kg), as well as the number of cord plies – 4PR or reinforced 6PR.

⚠️ Practical tip: You can find the correct size on the sidewall of your old tire, in the owner's manual, or on the rim itself. The seat diameter should match perfectly, but the width and profile can be adjusted slightly (for example, installing a 2.75-17 instead of a 2.50-17 on the rear wheel is acceptable and even encouraged for riding with a passenger or cargo).

Our store catalog features 2.50-17 TT AGRO MOTO moped tires (with 4PR/6PR indexes) for the front axle and wide 2.75-17 tires (reinforced 6PR) for the rear. The current price is always available on the official TTG Agro-Moto website. Our selection is constantly expanding, so everyone can find the right product.

Popular moped tire sizes – what's on the market

Tire sizes are selected based on the specific model and series of the moped. For Chinese-made mopeds of the most common series, such as Alpha, Delta, Viper, and Musstang, several sizes are used.

The table below lists the most popular models on the market:

Size Characteristics
➡️ 2.50-17 TT AGRO MOTO The standard size for the front wheel of most Alpha, Delta, and Active mopeds is a 17" rim. The profile width is approximately 63.5 mm, and the permissible load (38L/41P index) is up to 132-145 kg. This ensures easy handling and minimal rolling resistance.
➡️ 2.75-17 TT AGRO MOTO A larger and more popular option for the rear axle of mopeds (Alpha, Delta, Viper). A profile width of approximately 70 mm provides an improved contact patch. Reinforced versions (6PR) can withstand loads of up to 155-165 kg (43P/45P index), making them ideal for riding with a passenger or luggage.
➡️ 3.00-18 TT AGRO MOTO A classic size for light motorcycles and heavy mopeds (Minsk, Viper 125/150, Mustang MT125). The 76 mm profile width and increased R18 radius provide excellent traction on dirt roads and potholes, while the 6PR/8PR ply rating protects against punctures on dirt roads.
➡️ 3.00-10 TT AGRO MOTO The most popular size for city scooters (Honda Dio, Yamaha Jog, Suzuki Sepia) with 10-inch rims. The tire width is 3", and the aspect ratio is approximately 76 mm. It provides excellent maneuverability on asphalt and can withstand loads of up to 135-150 kg at a recommended pressure of 1.75-2.0 bar.
➡️ 3.50-10 TT AGRO MOTO Wide tires for maxi-scooters and Chinese scooters with a capacity of 125-150 cc (Viper Storm, Race, Grand Prix). They feature an increased width of 89 mm and a higher load index (up to 195-200 kg per wheel), ensuring a smooth ride and stability at speeds of up to 90-100 km/h.

The above dimensions completely cover the needs of owners of light equipment.

Types of tread on moped tires

The tread pattern completely determines the behavior of the moped on the road surface, especially in the rain or on gravel.

Street / Road tread

Characterized by a fine directional or symmetrical tread pattern with shallow grooves. ✅ The tread depth of these tires is typically 3.5-5.0 mm, and the 2-3 mm wide grooves are angled to effectively remove water from the contact patch at speeds up to 80-100 km/h. When choosing a road tire, the following performance characteristics are evident:

  1. Low noise: The tires roll quietly and smoothly on asphalt, without creating any hum or vibration.
  2. Excellent traction: The wide contact patch ensures reliable braking on the highway and a short braking distance on dry asphalt.
  3. Long service life: The hard rubber compound wears very slowly (up to 12,000-15,000 km without loss of performance).
  4. Poor off-road performance: The tire quickly spins in loose mud or deep sand, as the grooves, up to 5 mm deep, simply have no grip on the soft ground.

These properties make road tires ideal for urban conditions. These tires are designed for smooth asphalt, such as the 2.50-17 tire from TT AGRO MOTO (road, 4PR/6PR).

Universal / Trail type

They feature a medium tread pitch and a block or combination tread pattern. ➡️ The tread depth of this moped tire is 6-9 mm, and the distance between the tread blocks is increased to 5-8 mm, allowing the tire to grip uneven ground without catastrophically losing contact with the asphalt. Using these universal tires has several distinct advantages:

  1. Compromise properties: the tire performs confidently on both asphalt and dry dirt roads.
  2. Deep drainage channels: effectively drain water and light slush from the contact patch, minimizing the risk of hydroplaning when driving through puddles.
  3. Medium hardness: the tread blocks do not bend on hard surfaces, and the average service life of this tire, when used in a 60% asphalt/40% dirt mix, is 8000-10000 km.

As a result, the buyer receives a well-balanced tire for any everyday commute. These tires are suitable for mixed-use routes, and a popular example is the 2.75-17 TT AGRO MOTO (universal tread, 6PR ply rating, 43P load index – up to 155 kg).

Cross/enduro tread pattern (Off-road)

This class is easily recognized by its large, protruding lugs and deep spacing between them. ✅ The lug height of these tires reaches 10-14 mm, and the spacing between the blocks can range from 10 to 15 mm, creating a powerful lever for traction on loose surfaces. Purchasing a moped tire with a motocross tread pattern provides the rider with the following specific characteristics:

➡️ 1. Maximum grip.
The moped easily overcomes soggy clay and deep sand, its lugs digging like a bucket and pulling the vehicle up steep climbs.
➡️ 2. Fast self-cleaning.
Dirt does not get trapped between the sparse blocks during rotation, as centrifugal force instantly ejects liquid soil from the deep grooves.
➡️ 3. Increased vibration.
On hard asphalt, the moped begins to make noise, and the steering wheel shakes unpleasantly, since the wheel does not roll on a continuous tread strip, but intermittently hits the road surface with individual blocks.
➡️ 4. Accelerated wear.
Soft lugs quickly wear out on hard surfaces – with regular driving on asphalt, the service life of a motocross tire is reduced to 3000-5000 km, and the sharp edges of the lugs are licked smooth within the first season.

This combination of characteristics requires a conscious choice of riding conditions. Tires are essential off-road, and the reinforced 3.00-17 TT AGRO MOTO model (cross/enduro, 6PR/8PR, with aggressive lateral lugs for confident rutting) is a perfect example.

Seasonality – is there a difference between summer and winter tires for a moped?

There are no specialized winter tires for mopeds, and the only difference lies in the tire compound: hard summer tires handle heat well, but when temperatures drop below 5°C, they stiffen and lose grip. ⚠️ For cold weather and the transitional seasons, choose all-season models or tires with a soft compound that maintains elasticity. A directional tread with deep grooves ensures safety when riding in rain and slush. However, when temperatures drop below -5°C or on icy roads, it is recommended to completely stop riding a moped for the driver's safety.

Alloy vs. spoke wheels – which to choose?

Choosing between cast and spoked wheels for a moped depends on more than just appearance. The type affects the wheel's strength and weight, repairability, load-bearing capacity, and how well the moped handles on different types of road surfaces.

Cast wheels (alloy)

Models of this type are made of lightweight aluminum alloys and feature a rigid, monolithic structure. Owners planning to buy cast wheels for a moped should be aware of their key features:

  1. ➡️Easy maintenance: there is absolutely no need to check the tension or regularly tighten the spokes.
  2. ➡️Simple upkeep: the smooth, round rims are much easier to clean of road dust and mud.
  3. ➡️Modern design: their stylish appearance makes them extremely popular on the latest generation of Chinese mopeds.
  4. ➡️Tubeless fitting: the rim"s sealed structure is ideal for fitting modern tubeless tyres.

However, the monobloc design also imposes certain technical limitations, such as susceptibility to deformation and costly repairs – ⚠️ in the event of a heavy impact with a deep pothole or kerb, the rigid aluminium does not bend but cracks or splits, which often requires the wheel to be replaced entirely.

This type of component is primarily intended for city riding, high-quality smooth tarmac and suburban roads. ✅ Example: Janta TT AGRO MOTO 17*1.2 front rim (for drum or disc brakes) for Delta/Alpha mopeds and Janta 17*1.4 TT AGRO MOTO cast rear rim for Delta/Alpha mopeds.

Spoked wheels

A classic spoked wheel system consists of a sturdy steel rim, a central hub and a set of individually tensioned metal spokes. This engineering approach is designed to withstand heavy loads.

Under real-world conditions, spoked wheels for mopeds offer a number of significant advantages:

Characteristics Features
Effective suspension Metal spokes are able to "flex" and spring slightly, effectively absorbing the energy from heavy impacts. This protects the hub bearings and front fork components when riding regularly over potholes, gravel and bumpy country lanes.
Easy to repair If a wheel becomes out of true, the rim can easily be straightened by tightening the spoke nipples to correct the "figure-of-eight" distortion, whilst a broken spoke can be replaced individually without having to buy the whole assembly.
Excellent off-road capability Its robust design is ideally suited to rough roads and challenging rural terrain.

These advantages ensure that the wheels offer maximum durability when travelling over rough terrain.

Despite their durability, spoked mechanisms have their own distinctive drawbacks:

  1. Labour-intensive maintenance: moped owners have to regularly check and tighten the spokes using a special spanner to prevent the wheels from going out of round (particularly after running in new wheels or carrying heavy loads).
  2. Tyre restrictions: for the vast majority of these rims, it is essential to purchase an inner tube for the moped (Tube Type, TT), as air escapes instantly through the spoke holes in the rim.
  3. Difficult to clean: the abundance of small, interlaced parts makes it considerably more difficult to clean the wheel of caked-on mud. It is advisable to treat the spokes with anti-corrosion compounds to protect them from rust.

Spoked wheels are indispensable for regular off-road and dirt track riding, and are often found on classic models.

✅ Example: Janta TT AGRO MOTO R17*1.2 front wheel (with a chrome-plated steel rim and reinforced 3.5 mm spokes) for the Delta/Alpha moped, as well as an R171.4 rear wheel for a drum brake.

Tubed vs tubeless tyres for mopeds

The difference between the two designs lies primarily in the construction of the wheel. The tube-type version uses a separate rubber inner tube, whilst in the tubeless version the air remains inside the tyre itself thanks to a tight seal against the rim.

The type of tyre required is entirely determined by the rim design:

  • Alloy wheels are most often designed for tubeless use (designated TL / Tubeless). They feature a special hump (circular protrusion) on the rim that secures the tire bead and prevents it from deflating even if the tire pressure drops sharply.
  • Spoke rims, due to the through holes for the spoke nipples, require the mandatory installation of an air chamber for a moped tire (designated as TT / Tube Type).

Mounting a tire on a spoked wheel without a tube is not recommended due to the inevitable air leakage. Therefore, for this type of chassis, it's essential to immediately purchase a moped tire with an air chamber or insert one inside the tire.

➡️ From a safety standpoint, a tubeless tire is much more reliable, as if punctured by a nail or screw, it releases air slowly (over several hours or even days), giving the rider time to safely reach a garage or tire shop.
